My Career Choices and the Inspiration
Updated: May 26
Career choices often serve as a staple, or solid guide in the life of a human, and mine are no different. So, instead of my usual technical blog posts I decided to take more of a personal approach to let my customers know exactly who they are dealing with.
Everyone has a preferred way of learning whether it is being self-taught or being trained in every aspect of a job. It took me three tries with college to figure out that a traditional way of learning was simply not for me–but EVERYTHING changed with I found Colorado Technical University!
A badge I earned through making my career choices!
Mid to late 2018, I was feeling a little down on my luck relationship wise and in desperate need of a way to add some serious meaning to my life. Right about the time I was at the bottom of that mental barrel, I discovered that I was pregnant with my youngest which led me to a feeling of urgency in the ways of a career, so I decided to try college one last time. This time however, I decided to go about it a different way which began with Education Connection, and after entering some of my interests and hobbies within their system I quickly discovered CTU (Colorado Technical University.) It was at this moment in time I decided to pursue a career development and design!
My First Career Choice of Web Development
I will carry the hard-learned lessons of my web development training with me for the rest of my life for certain! I enjoyed every course I took and most of my instructors throughout that 5-year program with CTU, but my proudest moments were making the dean's honor list for six different sessions over the course of about 2 years, and this is in addition to the badge I earned in recognition of my hard work. What I learned can be categorized into three steppingstones of knowing the work of a web developer:
Front-End Development
By definition, front-end web development is the process of creating a website's graphical user interface, or GUI, through the use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Front-end developers are responsible for the user interface, which is what the user sees first. When developing a website, front-end developers consider accessibility, performance, and speedy development to be of top priority.
Back-End Development
Back-end web development, also known as server-side development, is the process of building code for the logic and functionality of an application. It focuses on everything that's not visible on a website, such as databases, application programming interfaces, or APIs, architecture, and servers. Back-end developers are responsible for ensuring that the website performs correctly including:
Website Architecture
Scripting
Writing code that communicates between the website's database and the user's browser.
Data consistency and integrity.
Site responsiveness and speed.
Updating and changing the site.
Monitoring site functionality.
Hosting
In regard to web development, hosting is the process of storing a website's files and applications on a server so that the website can be accessed online. The files may include code, images, videos, and/or text. Web hosting is similar to renting a space on the internet. Some tasks of a host would include:
Making sure the server is up and running.
Preventing security breaches.
Storing all files, assets, and databases onto the server.
My Second Career Choice of Cybersecurity Programming
Cybersecurity programming refers to a documented set of an organization's policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards for information security. It also provides a roadmap for effective security management practices and controls. A strong security program helps ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of client and customer information, as well as the organization's private data.
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting critical computer systems and the sensitive information they contain from cyberattacks. It's also referred to as information security. Cybersecurity is comprised of an evolving set of tools, risk management approaches, technologies, training, and best practices designed to protect networks, devices, programs, and data from attacks or unauthorized access.
Some functions of a cybersecurity program include:
Earning resources for risk mitigation.
Information Governance
Creating, communicating, and enforcing policies and procedures.
Organizing and managing projects.
Updating Policies
Conducting Assessments
Incorporating New Technology
What led me to my interest as a cybersecurity programmer is my simple need to nurture and protect users from the vast, and growing, net of con artists, spammers, and scammers on the web today!
What keeps me going!
While the birth of my youngest may have been the spark that started my journey with CTU, it is my oldest child that keeps me going, despite the disappointments, despite the down time, and despite work being a little harder to find at times. However, it is for both of my kids that I have not and will never give up!
